It’s important to have all the ingredients ready before making shrimp ceviche! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 pound small shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 3/4 cup lime juice (freshly squeezed is best!)
  • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 small red onion, finely diced
  • 2 cups cherry tomatoes or grape tomatoes, halved
  • 1 medium cucumber, diced into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 avocado, diced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 sour dill pickle, finely diced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

If you are considering using frozen shrimp instead of fresh, make sure that it’s thawed completely. It might also be a good idea to make sure the shrimp is the right size. If the shrimp is too big, it may not cook evenly in the citrus juices.

Note: When making shrimp ceviche or other types of ceviche, raw seafood is “cooked” by the acidity of citrus juices such as lime or lemon juice instead of heat.

The combination of fresh shrimp, avocado, cilantro and onion creates a flavor explosion in your mouth.

One of the best things about this shrimp ceviche recipe is that it is incredibly versatile. One of the most common variations is to use different types of seafood instead of shrimp. You can make ceviche using anything from fish to crab meat and even lobster. You can also use a combination of different seafood for a more varied texture.

If you cannot find fresh shrimp, don’t worry! You can still make this recipe by using frozen shrimp. Just be sure to fully thaw the shrimp before starting, and pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture.

If you are not a fan of red onion, you can substitute it with thinly sliced shallots or scallions. Alternatively, if you want to add even more flavor and texture to your ceviche, diced cucumber, red or yellow diced bell peppers, or diced avocados are great options.

Another way to mix up the flavors in this recipe is to add tequila or soy sauce for an extra kick of flavor. If you’re looking for something spicier, adding diced jalapeno or serrano peppers will definitely do the trick!

Finally, if you prefer your ceviche on the sweeter side, adding some finely diced mango or pineapple will balance out the tartness of the citrus juices nicely. With all these variations at your fingertips, your summer shrimp ceviche possibilities are endless!

Once you’ve made this delightful shrimp ceviche recipe, it’s time to serve it in style. You can share it immediately, but it’s best to let it stand for 15 minutes before serving to ensure optimal flavor. You can also keep the ceviche cool in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

The perfect way to present and enjoy shrimp ceviche is with tortilla chips or crackers. The crunch of the chips paired with the tangy, refreshing flavors of the ceviche are a perfect match.

For pairing options, consider a cold beer or a cheeky tequila cocktail. A light beer with citrus undertones or a margarita with fresh lime juice echoes those same fresh citrus flavors found in the ceviche.

If you want a non-alcoholic option, try serving it with sparkling water infused with lemon or lime. This makes for a refreshing drink that highlights the ceviche’s lighter flavors.

A great tip for serving is to include small bowls that allow your guests to easily top up their chips or crackers. That way, everyone gets an even share of the delicious shrimp pieces and other ingredients.

Finally, don’t forget presentation! Topping your dish with cherry tomatoes, chopped avocados, and thinly sliced red onions not only adds color but also gives your guests some additional toppings to choose from. Follow these tips and you’ll have yourself a shrimp ceviche party sensation that will get people talking!

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

One bite of this Shrimp Ceviche and you’ll feel like you’re lounging on a beach in Rio.

If you need to prepare this shrimp ceviche recipe in advance, you can do so by refrigerating it for up to two hours. However, keep in mind that ceviche is best consumed fresh and its flavors begin to diminish after a few hours.

When storing leftover shrimp ceviche, make sure to cover it tightly with plastic wrap and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. It’s important not to freeze the shrimp ceviche as freezing changes the texture of the shrimp and ruins the flavor.

If you want to reheat your leftover shrimp ceviche, we recommend that you do not. Ceviche is a dish that is meant to be served cold and cooking it will alter the texture and quality of the ingredients.

In case you have some remaining ingredients that you don’t want to throw away, consider using them for other seafood dishes such as shrimp scampi or Peruvian ceviche. Alternatively, you can add them to salads, tacos or even make ceviche tostadas with them!

For the perfect party shrimp ceviche, it’s important to pay attention to the details. Here are some helpful tips to make sure your dish is a hit:

1. Freshness is Key

One of the most important factors in making shrimp ceviche is using fresh ingredients, especially the shrimp. Be sure to purchase high-quality, deveined and peeled small shrimp.

2. Cook with Citrus Juice

Shrimp cooks quickly in lime or lemon juice which adds flavor and tenderizes the meat. However, be careful not to overcook as lime juice can toughen the shrimp if left for too long.

3. Make it Ahead of Time

Shrimp ceviche is a great make-ahead dish for a gathering or party. However, wait to add avocado and cilantro until just before serving to prevent browning.

4. Mix up the Vegetables

While tomatoes and onions are a staple in most shrimp ceviche recipes, don’t be shy about mixing up the vegetables. Cucumber, bell peppers, corn kernels or even mango can add a pop of color and flavor variation.

5. Experiment with Substitutions

Sour dill pickle instead of cucumber red? Worcestershire sauce instead of soy sauce? Ketchup instead of tomato? Don’t be afraid to experiment with substitutions and variations that match your personal preferences.

6. Serve with Tortilla Chips

Shrimp ceviche is best enjoyed with tortilla chips for some added texture and crunch. Try baking your own tortilla chips for a healthier option.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to create an amazing party shrimp ceviche recipe that’s sure to impress your guests!

FAQ

As with any recipe, there may be some questions that arise during the cooking process. With that in mind, here are some of the most commonly asked questions about this shrimp ceviche recipe to help ensure that your dish turns out perfectly.

How long should ceviche be marinated?

The time you allow your fish to marinate can affect the outcome of your ceviche. The recommended time for the citrus to “cook” the fish varies from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the fish pieces. While two hours is acceptable, anything beyond that can result in a pickled fish taste rather than a fresh ceviche.

How long does raw shrimp need to sit in lime juice?

To begin, start by putting the shrimp in a spacious mixing bowl. Pour in 1/2 cup of lime juice and let it sit for 15 minutes so that the shrimp can “cook” in the acidic juice. It is important to stick to this time frame as any less than 15 minutes and the shrimp won’t be cooked, and any longer will result in toughened shrimp.

How do you serve ceviche at a party?

When it comes to serving ceviche as an appetizer, I suggest dividing it into small cups or glasses. Pour the marinating citrus juice over the ceviche and add a sprig of cilantro to garnish. You can enjoy it with tortilla chips, plantain chips, crackers, or bread. I also like serving ceviche on top of crispy wonton wrappers or tostada shells for added texture and flavor.

Do you use frozen or fresh shrimp for ceviche?

Thawing frozen shrimp is necessary to utilize it for this recipe, despite some markets selling defrosted frozen shrimp as “fresh.”

Bottom Line

In conclusion, this party shrimp ceviche recipe is a must-have for anyone looking to impress their guests with a delicious and unique appetizer. With its perfect combination of tangy citrus juices, crunchy vegetables, and succulent shrimp, this ceviche is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Furthermore, this recipe’s versatility makes it even more enticing. You can easily substitute or add any ingredients you like or experiment with various variations, such as tequila-infused ceviche or fish ceviche.

Remember to follow the tips provided in this article, such as using fresh shrimp and letting the lime juice cook the shrimp for only 15 minutes to avoid overcooking that will result in tough shrimp.

In summary, whether you’re throwing a summer party or enjoying an intimate dinner with your loved ones, this shrimp ceviche is guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds. So what are you waiting for? Grab some fresh ingredients and get ready to make the perfect party shrimp ceviche.
